Meet The Board of Directors
Ellen first came to the area in 2002 to work as a guide for Deer Hill Expeditions in Mancos. After working in Wilderness Therapy for many years she officially settled in the area in 2008 when she bought a home and took over as the Field Director for Open Sky Wilderness Therapy. Ellen has a background in working with at-risk youth in all types of organizations and programs. She has a BA in Sociology and Spanish from UNC Asheville. She is currently working at Southwest Open School and running a few businesses of her own. Ellen is passionate about nature and being outside, working with people, especially teenagers, and trying to help save the earth. She is an avid mountain biker, skier and weight lifter. She loves watching movies and traveling to any place on the planet she can get to.
Lauren came to the southwest in 2015 a year after finishing her BS in Biology from Lynchburg College in Virginia. She took a position with Southwest Conservation Corps working on a route inventory project for the BLM office in Dolores, CO. During that time she fell in love with the area and despite telling her family and friends she would move back east after the summer she never left. Since then she has made a home and community here. Currently, she works for United Way as the TeamUp coordinator for Montezuma and Dolores Counties. Additionally, she works part time as a Library Assistant at the Dolores Public Library. She feels most at home though in the desert where she pursues running, climbing and any other forms of adventure that come her way!
Chuck McAfee was born in Cortez, grew up on a farm in Lewis and graduated from M-CHS. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Colorado and then at Stanford University. His professional career was with Hewlett-Packard. Chuck and his wife MB returned to Southwest Colorado in 1998 to become re-engaged in their home community. Chuck is involved in the local and regional nonprofit realm where he serves a number of boards of directors. His favorite pastimes are conversation, laughing, and attempting to keep up with friends on local mountain bike trails.
Vangi McCoy is the Coordinator for the Montelores Early Childhood Council, serving Montezuma and Dolores Counties. She also serves on SCYC’s board, the Dolores Re4a School Board, San Juan BOCES board, Nurse Family Partnership Community Advisory Board, Early Childhood Council Leadership Alliance board and teaches early childhood courses at the community college. Her BA is from Arizona State University in Elementary Education and MA is from University of Denver in Educational Leadership and Policy, where she was a Buell Fellow. She is married with four grown children and an 8 year old granddaughter.
Stephanie relocated to the area in 2008 from San Diego. She recently bought her first home in Mancos and is enjoying peaceful country living. She worked in wilderness therapy for seven years before becoming a youth advocate at La Plata Youth Services, a non-profit organization in Durango. She recently received her Master of Social Work degree from New Mexico Highlands University. Stephanie loves supporting youth discover their own unique way of being in the world. She enjoys anything that gets her outside especially when it’s with her amazing dog, Luna (aka Looney tunes). She loves mountain biking, laughing out loud, creating art, spending time with family and friends, and she never passes up an opportunity to explore the open road.
Mindi Clark has been a Cortez native since 1980. Mindi and her husband Matt have lived in the area for a number of years and are actively engaged in their community. Mindi is passionate about health and well-being, and brings her extensive background in the health industry to SCYC. She enjoys working with local high school youth as an RN at the Montezuma Cortez High School in the school based health clinic. Mindi also serves on the community advisory board for Nurse Family Partnership and Safe Care. In her free time, Mindi enjoys camping, hiking, rafting, exercising, and exploring the outdoors with her husband Matt and their dashing son Owen.
