High School Leadership is a youth-oriented leadership development program for high school sophomores and juniors to provide them with skills, knowledge, experiences, networking opportunities and encouragement to become partners for positive change in their communities. The group meets 1 time per month for 1 full day, 4 months during the school year (September-December) plus a 2-day retreat in September. Students come from 5 area high schools from Montezuma and Dolores counties: Dolores, Montezuma-Cortez, Southwest Open School, Mancos, and Dove Creek. Each meeting has a theme to help build skills for transitioning into leadership roles in their schools, communities, or other parts of life. We invite key community members to come as volunteers or the group will visit a key organization in the community to help guide youth through activities pertaining to specific themes. Sessions occur in various places around the Montelores communities depending on theme or goal of that day’s meeting.
